Located in a beautiful landscape, we intend to create a building where staff and visitors are constantly reminded of the beauty of nature and the inherent role of water
The proposal of the new Køge Water Supply reaches into the future to create a new brand to Køge, that will heighten our consciousness about drinking water as a precious resource. A water supply that works as a signature for clean drinking water, and at the same time is a good and functional working place and a local attraction.
It is hard to imagine a world where we cannot drink water from the tap. However, clean drinking water is not a matter of course. The world population is rising. The cities are growing. The poles are melting. The sea level is rising. The rain water is falling more intensively. The pesticides are soaking into the ground. Clean drinking water is gradually becoming the most precious currency - a currency that is diminishing day for day.
The New Water Supply in Køge is our ambition to create a forefront building with the most cutting-edge water technology. As part of this, the building is designed to be part of a respectful symbiosis with the surroundings - in all phases of the water cycle.
We wish to create a building that works in the best possible way as a modern “water-industrial building” and at the same time has a good work environment.
Also, we want it to be an example of how a man-made structure can be part of a natural ecosystem in terms of materials and design.
The building works as one unit but is grasped as three smaller buildings. Each volume contains a department – Water process, Administration and Service. Each of the volumes are designed and programmed to optimize its function. It has been an overall concept to incorporate and accentuate the relation of the building towards Nature and the outdoor spaces. In that way, the volumes and outdoor spaces of the water supply can be experienced as a courtyard where both indoor and outdoor circulation connect the functions of the building. However, in contrast to the classical central courtyard closed by three facades, our building creates a higher level of synergy between the three volumes by organizing them “parallel” to each other. At the same time, the volumes are rotated slightly to each other, which results in a converge of outdoor spaces and indoor spaces to a whole, where outdoor, indoor and in-between movement feel naturally. Natural day light and ventilation are integrated in the building to create a good indoor climate for staff and visitors.
