Meatpacking District School
A new school in Copenhagen, rooted in the white Meatpacking District.
The new school in the Meatpacking District is like learning landscapes woven into the white post-industrial meatpacking district.
The school’s learning profile is focused on the culture, growth and production of food, and on its impact on healthy living and meals, especially social dining experiences. The school stresses the importance of learning in practice and in theory, tailored to the students specific ages, encouraging a creative and experimental approach to food – from farm to table, from plot to plate. Learning and experimenting in this roofscape of the school, encourages the students to develop new sustainable food systems with a low impact on climate and high awareness of a social food culture.
The new Meatpacking School hinges itself to the historic Meatpacking District as the missing corner and as an important meeting point in the city. The school rethinks the classic Meatpacking materiality, functionalism and industrial structure.
The school is designed with several outdoor terraces descending from the highest point of the building at the corner, towards the inner part of the meatpacking district. The white roofscape provides different levels with recreational spaces, urban gardening and playgrounds that combine teaching, movement, action and recreation.
A white school inspired by the characteristic white Meatpacking facades and its horizontal layers and materiality. By using dark and white ceramics we rethink the characteristic Meatpacking interplay between a dark base and a white faceted monolithic volume.

We are trying to extend and rethink the Meatpacking’s functionalism in the school architecture. The design connect to the unique place and addresses the historic characteristics of the area - as a new and modern addition.
A playful learning environment
A vertical common space
A dynamic groundfloor

A new food school
The new school is a interplay of learning- and production landscapes focusing on local food production that ensures low co2-emission on food produce. Compound white volumes create a new form of urban landscape topology in the city.
School as landscape
The school has several outdoor terraces descending from the highest point of the building at the corner, towards the inner part of the meatpacking district. The white roofscape provides different levels with recreational spaces, urban gardening and playgrounds that combine teaching, movement, action and recreation.

The corner is formed by a vertical common space with a library, a sports hall, an auditorium and a vertical playground. The horizontal public groundfloor naturally utilizes the jump in terrain and open up towards the city.
