Embracing a new and flexible approach to our school’s learning environments, the proposal for the School at Sluseholmen develops a distinct identity of five characteristic “houses”. Each “house” allows for a flexible yet specified approach to learning, encourages physical exploration and provides a tangible backdrop for curiosity.
The organization of the school encourages active learning as the outside and inside weave together providing a flexible and terraced learning landscape. With green environments as a central focus the school becomes a diverse and shared educational landscape, ranging from contemplational niches and group areas to engaging project surfaces and exhibition plateaus.
Placed as a portal to the green areas and blue waterfront of Sluseholmen, the school embraces its green identity at many levels. From the lush and differentiated vegetation at the ground level, terraces and facades to sustainable building techniques with reuse and future flexibility as key parameters.
Fluent indoor and outdoor connections encourage an active school day, and the focus on social and educational potentials provide a broad sustainability for locals during the whole day. Being both a school and public gathering space, the proposal strengthens the physical and visual connections to the many outdoor possibilities of the area as well the social potentials for the local community.
